WHAT'S NEW?
Summer Showcase
Get ready for our upcoming virtual Summer Art Showcase! The show is a virtual promotion which will run mid-July to the end of August. The work of our participating artists will be featured on social media and through a gallery and slideshow page on the WCAS website.
Be sure to check out the links on our social media and help fellow artists by liking and sharing posts and visiting their websites. The showcase will start soon!
Fall Show
Due to Covid restrictions, we have cancelled this year’s physical $100 and Under Show. However, we are investigating a potential venue for a physical show that will more easily enable us to follow protocols.
This is in the early stages of planning, but to ensure the show goes ahead, we need your help! Roles to be filled include application and selection processing, preparing social media content, promotion, set up and hanging, as well as any other random tasks that go along with organizing an exhibition!
Want to help out and ensure this show gets off the ground? Please email Kathryn Sauvé at [email protected].
RECENT EVENTS
Spring Fling
The WCAS Spring Fling Juried Art Show was a big success! Featuring 60 pieces of art presented by 33 of our members, the show helped to welcome in the warmer weather by showcasing the vibrant work of our gifted artists.
An abundance of social media attention and traffic to the show’s online site resulted in the sale of several spectacular pieces by the following artists: Janet Tulloch, Leslie Morin, Brent McGillivray, Bonnie McQuillan and Kathryn Sauvé. Congratulations to all!
Congrats also goes out to Lori Ridgeway, Carolyn Sandor-Weston and Anne Heather-Moore whose artworks were Juror’s Choice, Juror’s Choice Honourable Mention and Honourable Mention, respectively. Great job everyone!

WCAS Connects
On April 28, WCAS held its first virtual Meet and Greet via Zoom. There was a good turnout and participants had a fun evening. Organizer Robyn Lester shared her feedback on this event:
"Our first virtual meet & greet was a great success. It was wonderful to be able to connect with new and existing WCAS members from the safety of our homes/studios and to catch up on what we've all been up to over the past year and a bit."
We look forward to chatting again, so stay tuned for details regarding our next online session. Should protocols ease, we will also look at planning a physical get together in the fall.
ARTiculate
Thank you to Brenda Beattie, Luigina Baratto and Michael Schreier, the talented guest speakers of our most recent ARTiculate online speaker series. Participants took part via Zoom to learn some new techniques, discuss the creative process and maybe even develop an interest in a new art form! These three engrossing evenings were well attended, and we thank all who participated.
We’ll be taking a break from the ARTiculate sessions over the summer months but will be back in the Fall with new presenters and maybe even an in-person event should COVID-19 protocols allow. Fingers crossed!
OPPORTUNITY: BE A VENUE CURATOR!
Do you ever think you'd make a fabulous art curator? Now is your chance. As the region starts to slowly transition to "a new normal", we will also be ready to open our venues! This is a great place to start in the world of curating, as The Carp Library needs a new team lead to manage its art displays. WCAS has partnered with the library to showcase the original artwork of our artists in their main areas and meeting room. Our former team lead for this venue will be available with some guidance on the transition.
Please contact Kathryn Sauvé at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming team lead for this small venue.
More volunteer opportunities are listed on our website. https://www.westcarletonartssociety.ca/volunteers-needed.html
VENUE SALES!
Congratulations to Katharine Fletcher for her sales of “Please Keep in Touch #1” and “Please Keep in Touch #2” from the West Carleton Family Health Team in Carp!

SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS
Take a short video to engage your viewers! A close up of your work, your creative process, a view of your studio! Regular videos can help your feed stay in the social media algorithm and attract followers.
When posting your work to social media, using plenty of hashtags will increase the chances of your art being seen. Promote your work as a member of the WCAS by using the following suggested hashtags:
#westcarletonartssociety #artonthewalls #artforsale #ottawaartists #localartists #westendartists #localartisans #carpontario #mixedmedia #abstractart #photography #ceramics #fineart #ottawafineart #glassart #fabricart
Also, don’t forget to add a @westcarletonartssociety tag to your post. By doing this, WCAS will be notified and can then share/promote your work! Simply add @westcarletonartssociety to all your posts and the platform will tag us. Please use @westcarletonartssociety rather than @wcas as the latter tag is used heavily by another organization.
Finally, please like and share our posts on Facebook and Instagram. As social media users, we can all acknowledge the promotional value of a like, comment, share or follow. Let’s support each other!

Arts Carleton Place Spring Fine Art Show & Sale
The annual spring fine arts show and sale held by Arts Carleton Place was unfortunately delayed twice due to COVID-19, so the decision was made to postpone it until this September 11 and 12. Fingers crossed, COVID protocols will allow this in person show to go ahead as planned in the Fall!
St. Laurent Shopping Centre Pop Up Project
St. Laurent Shopping Centre is providing an excellent opportunity for artists to exhibit their work. In their quest to support local businesses, they are providing dedicated retail space for local Pop-Up stores including prime retail space at affordable rates. If you've been looking for a chance to promote and showcase your artwork, look no further. Fine art galleries, recruiters, clothing companies, recreation businesses and local artisans (individual or shared space) have all been showcased.
The specialty leasing manager can offer a zero rental fee and a 20% commission on sales agreement and the duration of the pop-up can be as little as one day or a weekend, depending on availability. Rates may be higher during the holiday period.
